Îπtë®νїεωS: Ethical principles.

1.- What’s your name?
Yelena Arely Torres López
2.- What are you studying? How long have you been studying at TEC?
I´m studying the fourth semester of Law and Economics at Tec de Monterrey, Campus Puebla, where I also studied my preparatory, so I’ve been here for almost five years since I started to study in this institution.
3.- Could I ask you a few questions about ethics at college?
Of course, that seems a very interesting topic.
4.- As members of the academic community, teachers and students have the responsibility to obey ethical principles; do you think there should be some punishment for those who don´t respect that?
I think there should be some kind of punishment for those who don’t respect ethical principles, because it’s time that people learn how to behave as they do at their homes where their family or parents punish them when they do or say something wrong .
5.- Do you think academic honesty is central in the educational process?
Of course, for over a fifty percent of the students, school is like their second house, because they spend plenty of time there so the actions that they do there define them.
6.- Do you know what cheating is? Do you considerer cheating an ethical issue at college? Could that be a reason to get expelled?
I think that all the people that have been in any part of their life at school know what cheating is. Since we were children we learned that there are other ways, besides studying, to get a good grade, now that we are in collage many of us don’t understand that the knowledge that we get here will be very important and useful for all our lives. I think this problem should have a punishment that could be getting expelled, although I prefer something like community service.
7.- Have you ever brought a cheating sheet to a test?
I did it once in high school but I didn’t have the courage to use it.
8.- What do you think about those students who cheat on a test? In your opinion, what would be an appropriate sanction for them?
Those students don’t understand yet that life is harder than school, and that if they try to cheat now they will try it later and it will become a terrible habit.; and when they finish their studies they will realize that they don’t know anything.
I think teachers would be able to talk to the students´ parents and ask them to help their sons and daughters to study, and if that doesn’t work there is community service, and the final sanction getting, expelled.
9.- Do you know what plagiarism is? It is representing the ideas, words, or data of another person or persons as one´s own. Do you think plagiarizing is a quite common practice among students nowadays?
Nowadays most of the students have access to internet so it’s easier to take other person’s notes. People should learn that technology must be used for our development and not backwards, and if we use an idea from other person we must give him (or her) the credit for his (her) effort because he or she worked hard for it.
10.- What could we do to prevent or sanction plagiarism?
This is a difficult question; I think parents should teach their children since the beginning that they must respect others’ work. And the sanction depends on the kind of plagiarism.
11.- What do you think about discrimination based on race, gender, religion, sexual orientation, etc?
I think this is one of the most terrible things that people can do, It’s incredible that discrimination based on race, gender, religion and sexual orientation still happen in our society, women and men must understand that everyone can do whatever they want, we can’t judge them.
12.-Have you ever seen any member of the academic community engaged in discrimination or any other misconduct? (smoking, sexual harassment, unfair treatment, etc) No, I haven’t.
13.- If you saw anyone engaged in ethical misconduct, what would you do? Would you confront him or tell another person? I would talk to that person and ask him (or her) to stop doing it.
14.- In your opinion, what would be an example of unethical behavior? To cheat, to envy, to lie, etc.15.- Do you totally agree whit the moral code an school rules dictated by the university? If not, say why? I agree in general.
